Participation in EDP, MSME & Startup Boot Camp by Dr B. Manja Naik and Students
From 15th to 16th December 2025, Dr B. Manja Naik, Professor and Head, Department of Fish Processing Technology, along with twenty-eight final-year BFSc students and two M.F.Sc students, participated in the Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP), MSME and Startup Boot Camp organised by Nitte Institute of Pharmaceutical Education (IPE), Padil Campus, in collaboration with the Rotary Club Central and the Atal Incubation Centre, Nitte. The two-day event aimed to foster entrepreneurial thinking, business skills, and startup readiness through expert talks, interactive workshops, and collaborative activities.

Capacity Building Programme on Social Responsibility Assessment
A three day programme on Social Responsibility Assessment for the Indian Karnataka State Small Pelagics – Purse Seine Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) (prospective) was conducted at Malpe Fishing Harbour from 8 to 12 December 2025. The programme was led by Mr. Sven Blankenhorn (Indonesia) and organized in association with Yashaswi Fish Meal and Oil Company, Udupi. Three final year BFSc students Ashwini, Thanvi S Pangal and Ayana Ajims (FPT) actively participated in the programme by assisting in translating fisherfolk issues for the delegates. A total of 25 surveys were successfully completed during the programme.

World Fisheries Day and Ideathon 2025
The College of Fisheries, Mangaluru, through the Department of Fisheries Resource Management, organized World Fisheries Day – 2025 and Ideathon 2025 on November 21st, 2025. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Small Pelagic Purse Seine Fisheries – Karnataka State FIP, the College of Fisheries Alumni Association (COFAA), Mangaluru, and the New Age Innovation Network 2.0. The celebration aimed to promote sustainable practices in fisheries and encourage innovation-driven solutions for the blue economy, aligning with the theme, "India's Blue Transformation: Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports."
The programme commenced with a formal welcome address delivered by Dr. Mridula Rajesh, Professor and Head of the Department, who highlighted the global relevance of World Fisheries Day and emphasized the need for collective action to safeguard aquatic resources. She underscored the growing opportunities for youth in fisheries-based entrepreneurship, particularly in emerging areas of value addition, export-oriented production, and sustainable seafood systems. She further elaborated on the theme, "India's Blue Transformation: Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports," focusing on enhancing seafood processing, global competitiveness, and sustainable supply chains for fishers and fish farmers. The celebration emphasized integrating technology, traceability, and innovation to boost the blue economy and strengthen livelihoods.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Mr. Jaya C. Kotian, President of the Karnataka Coastal Fishermen's Action Committee, Uchila, Mangaluru. In his inaugural address, he spoke about the socio-economic significance of marine fisheries and stressed the importance of community-based management systems. He also encouraged academic institutions to work closely with fishermen to address field-level challenges.
The programme witnessed distinguished participation from Dr. S. R. Somashekara, Associate Director of Extension, KVAFSU, Bidar, who attended as Guest of Honour. He stressed the need for technology dissemination, stakeholder capacity-building, and improved extension strategies to enhance the resilience of fisherfolk.Other notable dignitaries present included Mr. Prakash K. V., Entrepreneur and Technocrat, Bengaluru, who encouraged youth to explore innovation-based enterprises.
The event was presided over by Dr. H. N. Anjanayappa, Dean of the College of Fisheries, Mangaluru. In his presidential remarks, he reiterated the crucial role of academia in promoting sustainability through research, industry partnerships, and skill development initiatives. He emphasized the importance of fostering student-led innovation for a sustainable future in fisheries.
As part of the celebrations, students participated in Ideathon 2025, a platform designed to encourage innovative solutions to contemporary challenges in fisheries, aquaculture, climate adaptation, and value addition. Registration for the event was facilitated through an online form open to students and young innovators, and participation was offered free of cost.
The keynote speaker, Mr. K. V. Prakash, entrepreneur and innovator from Bangalore, spoke on nature-inspired sustainable innovation and highlighted how biomimicry can address complex challenges in aquaculture through environmentally responsible solutions. He also presented successful case studies of nature-based inventions and emphasized the potential of innovation-driven entrepreneurship for economic sustainability.
This was followed by a technical session by Dr. Safeena M. P., Associate Professor and Head, Department of Aquatic Animal Health, KUFOS, Kochi, who highlighted major diseases affecting Indian aquaculture, their economic implications and modern biosecurity strategies such as diagnostics, vaccination, probiotics, and selective breeding. She also emphasized regulatory frameworks governing commercialization of aquaculture health products and discussed how innovations in fish health can lead to viable entrepreneurial ventures for young researchers. Throughout the event, the speakers encouraged students to explore sustainable alternatives, develop problem-solving capacity and apply scientific knowledge for real-world applications in the aquaculture sector.
The proceedings of the event were officiated by Dr. Nayana P., who served as the Master of Ceremony and facilitated the orderly conduct and coordination of the programme.The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Kumar Naik A. S., Associate Professor (In-charge), who acknowledged the contributions of dignitaries, collaborators, faculty, and students for their support and participation.
The event was coordinated by faculty members from the Department of Fisheries Resource Management, with active involvement from students. The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation and fostered meaningful interactions between stakeholders, reinforcing the commitment towards sustainable and inclusive development in the fisheries sector.
The observance of World Fisheries Day – 2025 and Ideathon 2025 concluded on a successful note, instilling awareness on environmental stewardship, fostering innovation, and promoting collaborative engagement for the betterment of fisheries and aquatic ecosystems.

AIR Recording on Fish Processing and Value-Added Products
A recording program was held at All India Radio, Mangalore on 3rd December 2025, where Dr. B. Manja Naik delivered talks on the topics “ಮೀನಿನ ಖಾದ್ಯ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಉದ್ಯಮಶೀಲತೆಯ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳು” and “ಮೌಲ್ಯವರ್ಧಿತ ಮೀನಿನ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳ ತಯಾರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತರಬೇತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರದ ಮಹತ್ವ.”

One Day Workshop on Preparation of RTE (Ready-to-Eat) Fish Products
A one day training workshop for well-established entrepreneurs on the Preparation of RTE (Ready-to-Eat) fish products in different culinary recipes packed in retortable pouches was organised on 26th November 2025 at the College of Fisheries, Mangalore. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. H. N. Anjanayappa, Dean, Fisheries and Sri Mahesh Kumar, GM, KFDC, Mangalore, who was the chief guest. Dr. B. Manjanaik, Organising Secretary, coordinated the programme successfully.

World Food Day 2025 and One-Day Technical Workshop on
“Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future”
World Food Day and the One-Day Technical Workshop on “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future: Sustainable Valorisation of Fish and Fishery Products for Nutrition and Food Security” were inaugurated by Mrs. Sanjana M. Shenoy, Senior Dietitian, Mangalore, by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
The Chief Guests of the function were Mrs. Komal Prabhu, Managing Director, Maharaja Hotel, Mangalore and Dr. Arun M. Isloor, Professor, Department of Chemistry, NITK, Surathkal. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Professor & Director, NUCSER, NITTE (Deemed to be University), Mangalore, and Sri. Ganesh, Managing Director, KFDC, Mangalore graced the occasion as Guests of Honour.
The function was presided over by Dr. H. N. Anjanayappa, Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangalore. Dr. B. Manjanaik, Professor and Head, Department of Fish Processing Technology, served as the Coordinator of the Programme, while Dr. Ganesh Prasad proposed the Vote of Thanks.
As part of the celebration, a Poster Making Competition based on the World Food Day 2025 theme was organized for UG and PG students. A total of 137 students and faculty members enthusiastically participated in the event and workshop.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY – 2025
As per the directive from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, through the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), Chennai, the College of Fisheries, Mangaluru was entrusted with the responsibility of organizing the International Coastal Cleanup Campaign on September 20th, 2025.
In line with this mandate, the Department of Fisheries Economics, Statistics, and Extension, in collaboration with the NSS unit, SEA=MC², and Someshwar Municipality, conducted the campaign at Someshwar Beach, Mangaluru. At daybreak, students and faculty gathered at the beach to carry out cleanup activities and raise awareness among the local community on the importance of cleanliness and environmental conservation.
The campaign was formally inaugurated in the presence of notable dignitaries, including Sri Ravishankar, Vice President of the Someshwar Municipality, and Sri Bhaskar Gatti, a Managing Committee Member of the Shri Somanatha Temple. Both dignitaries addressed the gathering and expressed their appreciation and support for the initiative. Dr. Shivakumar Magada, Director General of SEA=MC², graced the event as Guest of Honour and stressed the urgent need for sustainable practices to mitigate marine pollution.
The event was presided over by Dr. H. N. Anjanayappa, Dean of the College of Fisheries, who emphasized the importance of maintaining coastal cleanliness for the protection of marine ecosystems and the well-being of coastal communities.
The overall coordination of the campaign was efficiently managed by Dr. S. R. Somasekar, Senior Professor and Head of the Department, Fisheries Economics, Statistics, and Extension; Dr. Pradeep L. Doddamani, NSS Programme Officer; Dr. Madhu D. M., Assistant Professor at the College of Fisheries, along with other dedicated faculty members. The event also witnessed active participation from local residents, municipal staff, and regular beachgoers.
Volunteers, including students and faculty, collected various types of waste—such as plastic wrappers, bottles, cups, toys, and other litter left behind by beach visitors. The waste was carefully segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories and handed over to the Someshwar Municipality for appropriate disposal.
To further spread awareness, participants carried placards and organized a rally along the beach, urging the public to avoid single-use plastics and protect marine biodiversity. Informative pamphlets highlighting the harmful impacts of plastic and non-biodegradable waste were distributed to local residents and passersby.
The campaign concluded on a successful note, instilling a strong sense of collective responsibility towards protecting and preserving our coastal environment.

Experiential Learning Programmes in Fish Processing Technology -2025
The experiential learning program at the College of Fisheries (CoF), Mangalore, offers final-year B.F.Sc. Students' hands-on opportunities in fish processing and the creation of value-added fish products. Recently, different student batches have showcased their skills through the preparation of innovative seafood delicacies, reflecting both their technical expertise and creativity in culinary applications.

On 8th September 2025, final year BFSc students at CoF, Mangalore showcased their skills in seafood innovation by preparing dishes such as Shrimp Manchurian, Shrimp Tail-on Kabab, Pink Perch Fish Pancake, Rohu Fish Popcorn, and Lyophilized Fish Protein Powder, gaining hands-on experience in marination, grilling, fish mincing, battering, deep-frying, and advanced preservation methods while exploring both culinary creativity and the nutritional value of fish products.

Activities on 4th September 2025
On 4th September 2025, the program featured the preparation of shrimp biryani, a dish celebrated for its rich flavors and aromatic spices. Students learned every aspect of the process, from handling and cleaning shrimp to cooking rice with perfectly blended spices, culminating in an exquisite seafood biryani. This activity highlighted essential fish processing techniques and emphasized the importance of maintaining product quality and food safety standards throughout preparation.

The Experiential Learning Programme was organized at Fish Processing Technology, College of Fisheries, Mangalore on 13th August 2025 for fourth-year B.F.Sc. students. During the programme, the students developed a variety of Value-added fish products in the Ready-to-Eat (RTE), Ready-to-Fry (RTF), and Ready-to-Cook (RTC) categories and launched a business model. The programme was inaugurated and presided over by Dr. H. N. Anjanayappa, Dean (Fisheries), who encouraged students to develop entrepreneurial skills after graduation. The event was coordinated by Dr. Manjanaik, Head of the Department of Fish Processing Technology (FPT).

Celebration of World Environment Day and World Ocean Day 2025
The Department of Aquatic Environment Management, College of Fisheries, Mangalore, in collaboration with the Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, Government of Karnataka, and the Arabian Sea Fisheries Management Coordination Committee (Sea=MC²), organized a joint celebration of World Environment Day and World Ocean Day 2025 on 5th June 2025 at 3:00 PM in the Prof. H.P.C. Shetty Seminar Hall.
The programme was inaugurated by Shri Prakash K.V., Founder and Director of AdachiSvipegreen Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, by planting saplings on the college campus. He was accompanied by the Guest of Honour, Shri Antony S. Mariayappa, IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Mangalore, and Dr. Shivakumar Magada, Director General, Sea=MC², Mangalore. The event was presided over by Dr. H.N. Hanjanayappa, Dean of the College of Fisheries. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Lakshmipathi M.T. and Dr. S.R. Somashekar.
As part of the event, a skit titled “Yuva Jagruthi” was performed by Ranga Chalan, written and directed by Tulunadu Ratna Shri Dinesh Attavar, to raise awareness about environmental conservation.
